Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is home to the Heirloom Seed Project. Established thirty-five years ago, the Heirloom Seed Project focuses on the preservation of heirloom varieties of vegetables grown throughout the Pennsylvania Dutch region since the 18th century. The Heirloom Seed Project and Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum host the annual Herb & Garden Faire every May. This is the Lancaster area’s premiere event for the sale of heirloom vegetables, annuals, and perennials. The Project is also one of the only regional purveyors of flax seed and straw.
We are committed to preserving seeds donated by individuals whose families passed them from generation to generation. The Project continues to welcome donations of cherished heirloom vegetable seeds to preserve and share with others. The Heirloom Seed Project is staffed primarily by volunteers who tend the gardens, then harvest and package the heirloom seeds.
Heirloom or open-pollinated vegetables bring our history into the present with flavors and beauty from the past. They excel in flavor and often represent varieties no longer found elsewhere. Unlike hybrids, gardeners can save seeds from heirloom varieties with the assurance that each new generation of plants will bear fruit that is true its parent.
We sell fiber flax seed, retted flax straw, and unretted flax straw. Flax seed is sold in a wide variety of weights. We offer as little as four ounces to as much as 50 pounds.
