Bring your pack or troop to Landis Valley for a great day of learning and fun that satisfies their adventure requirements at the same time. Choose from any of the following workshops or contact our Education Department to craft a workshop of your own:
Scouts will meet in Landis Valley’s tavern to cook several items in the open hearth. They will learn all about the nutrition and daily cooking chores of the early Pennsylvania Germans. Scouts will have ample opportunity to explore several kitchens from various eras and will take home a collection of traditional PA German recipes.
Length of workshop: 2-3 hours
Number of scouts: 8-10
Recommended for ages: 10-16
Scouts will hear the story of wool processing, 1800’s style, from the sheep to fabric. They will then have an opportunity to try carding fresh wool, spinning wool into yarn, and weaving on a loom. Scouts can visit and learn about several types of sheep and will be given some wool and instructions to build their own drop spindle.

Recommended for ages: 8-14
Learn about 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania Dutch use of dyes for clothing. Scouts will prepare a dye bath from plant material and then try their hands at dying a piece of cotton cloth or wool. Scouts will take home information on identifying and utilizing the many natural dye materials traditionally used by Pennsylvania Germans.

Recommended for ages 8-14
This workshop allows scouts to explore the work of archaeologists at a created “dig.” Scouts will study archaeology terms, find and classify objects, and then draw conclusions about their finds. They will learn not only about the past but discover how event today’s lives can be studied through thrown away items. Scouts can take part in a self-directed on-grounds scavenger hunt for historical objects.

Recommended for ages: 10-16
Scouts are given the opportunity to learn about and explore one of several folk art traditions. Leaders may choose Fraktur, Scherenschnitte (paper cutting), Reverse Glass Painting, or Folk Toy activities. Scouts will take home directions to complete other folk art pieces.
