Skilled Volunteers Needed at Landis Valley!
Are you handy with a froe, skilled with a broad axe, or experienced in building databases? The Landis Valley Farm and Garden Program is seeking skilled volunteers to assist with several exciting restoration and documentation projects:

🔨 Fence & Roof Restoration – Log Farm (Late 1700s)

Picket Fence Rebuild: We need approximately 400 pickets split and installed around the vegetable garden. Volunteers with experience using a froe to split wood from logs are especially encouraged to help.
Hay Barracks Roof Repair: Many of the beams have rotted and must be replaced. Volunteers skilled in shaping beams with a broad axe are needed to help hew new timbers using the originals as templates.

Heirloom Seed Project Database
We’re building a new database to document the histories, sources, planting data, germination results, and inventory of our heirloom seeds. Volunteers with experience creating databases in Microsoft Access are encouraged to reach out.

Volunteer Opportunity: Animal Feeding Support

We are seeking a dependable, experienced volunteer to join our animal feeding schedule. Our care includes three horses, two cows, six sheep, and two flocks of chickens.

Feeding schedule

Morning: before 9:00 a.m.
Evening: before dark (time varies by season)

Time commitment

Each feeding typically takes 30–45 minutes to feed, water, and check the well-being of all animals.
Volunteers generally cover 1–2 feedings per week.
We especially need help with weekend shifts.

Museum Guide – Learn about the history of the Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum and Pennsylvania German culture and interpret our story for visitors.
Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum Store – Provide visitors with courteous assistance in our exceptional museum store, operate the cash register, and price merchandise.
Heirloom Seed Project – Work in our historic gardens as well as sort and package seeds for our well-known seed preservation project.
Office Support – Perform light office duties such as answering phones, doing data entry, mailing press releases, or other work as needed for special events.
Farm Program – Assist with and care for a variety of historic breeds of farm animals, their pastures, fences, and help to maintain farm equipment.
Curatorial Assistant – Work with museum collections, catalog items, arrange collections in storage, and perform data entry.
Special Events – Enjoy the excitement on the grounds during our numerous special events throughout the year. Ticket sellers, security, maintenance, and food sales are just a few of the many positions available.
Other Positions – Everyone has something to offer the Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum! Your special talent or interest may be a great fit with the Museum

Current Volunteer Needs

Gardener – Heirloom Seed Project – Help Garden in the seed gardens
Requires: Once a week
Farmer Helper – Person needed to do any of the following: help feed livestock, maintain fencing, rebuild gates, rough carpentry, prune fruit trees, etc.
Requires: Once a week to twice a month, more or less seasonally
Museum Store Salesperson – Help staff our museum store. You’ll stock sales items, interact with customers, ring up sales, and work as a team.
Requires: Once a week, any day but Wednesday.
