The Introduction to Stained Glass Workshop is a beginner-friendly class that teaches the fundamentals of stained glass using the Tiffany-style copper-foil method. This hands-on workshop offers participants the opportunity to learn essential glassworking techniques and create a finished glass suncatcher.

Stained glass has a long history as both a functional and decorative art form, used in windows, panels, and small decorative objects. The Tiffany method, developed in the late 19th century, allows for greater detail and flexibility than traditional lead-came construction. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to this widely used technique and gain practical experience working with glass.

The class begins with a demonstration of the basic tools and safety procedures used in stained glass work. Students will learn how to score, cut, and break glass, as well as how to handle materials safely. Practice time is included to help participants build confidence before starting their final project.

Each student will then create a 5” x 4” stained glass monstera leaf suncatcher, assembling individual pieces of glass using copper foil and soldering techniques. Instruction covers each step of the process, including preparing the glass edges, applying foil, assembling the design, and completing the final piece.

The Introduction to Stained Glass Workshop is designed for all ability levels, including complete beginners. No prior experience is necessary. The instructor provides step-by-step guidance and individualized assistance throughout the class, ensuring that each participant can successfully complete their project.

All tools and materials are included in the workshop fee, making it easy for participants to focus on learning the craft without needing prior equipment. Students who do not wear glasses should bring safety glasses, and all participants should bring scissors. An apron or smock is optional but recommended.

This workshop is open to participants ages 15 and up, due to the use of glass-cutting tools and soldering equipment. The class is held in the second-floor classroom of the Landis Valley Museum Store, accessible by one flight of stairs.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a completed stained glass suncatcher and a foundational understanding of the Tiffany method. The skills learned in this class can be applied to future stained glass projects, making it an excellent introduction to this rewarding craft.
