Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is home to the Heirloom Seed Project. Established thirty-five years ago, the Heirloom Seed Project focuses on the preservation of heirloom varieties of vegetables grown throughout the Pennsylvania Dutch region since the 18th century. May 12th and 13th the Heirloom Sed Project and Landis Valley Village & Farm Musuem will host the 35th annual Herb & Garden Faire. This is the Lancaster area’s premiere event for the sale of heirloom vegetables, annuals, and perennials.
We commit to preserving seeds donated by individuals whose families have passed them from generation to generation. We continue to welcome donations of cherished heirloom vegetable seeds to preserve and share with others. The Heirloom Seed Project is staffed primarily by volunteers who tend the gardens, then harvest and package the heirloom seeds.
Heirloom or open-pollinated vegetables bring our history into the present with flavors and beauty from the past. They excel in flavor and often represent varieties no longer found elsewhere. Unlike hybrids, gardeners can save seeds from heirloom varieties with the assurance that each new generation of plants will bear fruit that is true its parent.
The Heirloom Seed Project also sells heirloom varieties of plants during Herb and Garden Faire, held each year at the museum on Mother’s Day weekend.
