Heirloom Seed & Flax Catalog

Our heirloom gardens are lovingly maintained by dedicated volunteers who not only tend them but also package the seeds. Each May, Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum proudly hosts the annual Herb & Garden Faire, Lancaster area’s premier event for heirloom vegetables, annuals, and perennials.
In addition to offering a wide variety of seeds, our heirloom gardens remain one of the region’s few purveyors of flax seed and straw, preserving these traditional resources for future generations.
Our heirloom gardens offer a large variety of seeds including:
We welcome donations to support our heirloom gardens year-round. If you’re interested in contributing, please visit our catalog to learn more and make your donation.
Open pollinated seeds bring history to life, offering the flavors and beauty of the past. Known for their exceptional flavor, these seeds often represent rare varieties no longer found elsewhere. Unlike hybrids, open pollinated seeds from heirloom varieties can be saved and replanted, ensuring that each new generation stays true to its parent plant.
We proudly offer open pollinated heirloom seeds for flowers, vegetables, flax seed, flax straw, and more, all with rich historical ties to the region. Flax seed and flax straw, in particular, are one of our most popular items. Want to learn more or have questions about our open pollinated heirloom seeds? Contact us now!
Heirloom seeds differ from hybrid and many modern commercial seeds in how they are produced and preserved.

Heirloom varieties are especially valued for their historical significance, genetic diversity, and distinctive flavors.
Preserving heirloom seeds allows gardeners to maintain traditional plant varieties for future generations. At Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, these seeds are maintained through heirloom gardens where plants are grown, harvested, and packaged for future planting.
If you want to preserve heirloom seeds at home, the process typically includes:
This same careful process helps ensure that traditional plant varieties continue to thrive and remain true to their original characteristics.
The longevity of heirloom seeds depends on the plant type and how they are stored. When kept in cool, dry conditions, many seeds can remain viable for several years.
Proper storage, such as keeping seeds in sealed containers away from heat and moisture, can extend their lifespan and improve germination rates.
