BEESWAX CANDLE DIPPING, CINNAMON ORNAMENT and COLONIAL HISTORY PROGRAM
Step back in time to discover the art of working with natural beeswax. Participate in a live demonstration of this meticulous and lengthy process of candle dipping as they did in Colonial Times. Then we will switch gears and use beeswax for much more fun projects!
From 100% natural beeswax, learn how to make your own handdipped wick candle, and a 5″ cinnamon room scenter from a stoneware cookie mold (designs vary), plus a small tree ornament.
A Historic presentation throughout the class will reveal some interesting facts about Early American living and the art of candlemaking with actual reenactments from period dressed instructors Greg and Peggy Geesaman.
SYLLABUS CANDLEMAKING…
•A recreation history of candlemaking and its importance during the Colonial period to modern day using authentic tools
•We will alternate our discussion and activities back and forth between candlemaking practices of Early American and the fun crafts of today
•Participants will see a live demonstration of candlemaking using 2 authentic methods of candle making.. wick dipping and using a tin mold
•Discover the process of purifying 100% natural beeswax as they did in Early America with a live demonstration
•Give credit to the bees! An informative talk with show and tell items about bees natural process of making honey in a bee skep (woven bee hive) and modern techniques used today from a beehive frame
•Participants receive step-by-step instruction to make in class their own hand dipped 100% natural beeswax candle as they did in the 18th Century and also create a modern 100% beeswax ornament scented with natural cinnamon oil and pressed in a Stoneware Cookie mold, plus a small tree ornament

Peggy Allen, owner of Heritage Art & Craft Studio in Berks County has been teaching art and crafts or 30+ years. While teaching a variety of classes ranging from Colonial, Victorian, Early American Folk Art and current trends, it is her love of Pennsylvania German culture that she is most passionate about. Currently, Peggy teaches in conjunction with the Department of Aging for Berks Encore, she also teaches adults with special needs, as well as women’s groups, and individual studies.
