Summer Institute 2025: Grain Painted Mirror and Fraktur Bird

Create a grain-painted mirror for your wall with a painted fraktur bird. No experience necessary. All supplies provided. Participants will learn how to paint their own frame, and a template will be provided for painting the beautiful songbird. At the end of the class, your creation will be framed and ready to hang on the wall. Supplies include water colors, micron pens, glaze for grain painting, and a prepared frame. The frames are handmade by a local Amish woodworker. Bring a friend. Teens through retirement age alike can enjoy this! All materials will be supplied. If you have your own watercolor or calligraphy pens and would like to use them, feel free to bring them. The class will be held in the Landis Valley Museum Fire House.

Jim King and Lynn Sommer teach grain painting and fraktur classes together for various historical societies in eastern Pennsylvania. Their work can be found in the PA German Museum stores. Jim is the author of “False Graining Techniques” by Fox Chapel and Lynn, and “Amish Prayers: A Coloring Book” by Menno Media.
