Learn some fascinating history of early Pennsylvania Redware pottery, including how it was mined and processed, to the role and like of the potter with in the Pennsylvania German culture. Students will start with a prepared slab of red clay with white slip and cut out at least 5 ornament shapes. Then using the Sgraffito method you will scratch through the colored silp using traditional Fraktur designs. After the workshop Emily will bisque fire your pieces and cover them with a clear glaze and fire them once more. They will be available for pick up 4 weeks after the workshop at the Museum Store, The workshop is held in the Museum Store on the first floor Saturday November 8, 2025 9 PM – 12 PM All sales are final, no refunds. Proceeds benefit the Museum.

About Emily:

Ever since sixth grade, Emily Smucker-Beidler has been creating Fraktur after learning from Roma Ruth, a well known Fraktur Artist from Montgomery County, PA. After receiving an Art Education degree and a Master’s degree in Art Education, Emily make her 33 year career in teaching art her passion, while continuing to create custom Fraktur for hundreds of clients. Now as a newly retired teacher, she brings her experience and enthusiasm for teaching to her Fraktur workshops and welcomes artists of all ages and ability levels.
