The Traditional Rug Hooking Beginner Workshop is a hands-on starter class for individuals new to rug hooking or seeking a structured reintroduction to this traditional fiber art. Taught by experienced members of the Woolwrights Rug Hooking Guild, this workshop emphasizes foundational skills, familiarity with tools, and creative exploration in a supportive learning environment.
Rug hooking has long been part of American folk and domestic craft traditions, especially in rural households where practicality and creativity went hand in hand. In this workshop, participants learn how rugs were historically made using simple tools, available fibers, and thoughtful design. The class blends historical context with hands-on instruction, making it both educational and enjoyable.
Throughout the session, instructors guide students as they practice rug hooking using provided equipment and supplies. Participants will learn how loops are formed, how patterns emerge, and how to maintain consistent tension while hooking. Instructors discuss the advantages and limitations of different backing materials, helping students understand which options are best suited for various projects.
A significant portion of the Traditional Rug Hooking Beginner Workshop focuses on tools and equipment. Students explore how to select a rug hook that feels comfortable and effective, as well as a rug hooking frame and cutter that fit their needs. These practical discussions help participants make informed decisions about whether to continue rug hooking after the class.
The workshop also introduces students to the Wide World of Fibers, including wool strips, yarns, and decorative embellishments. By experimenting with different textures and materials, participants see how fiber choices affect the finished rug’s look and feel. This creative exploration builds confidence and encourages personal expression within the craft.
Participants may choose to complete either a 4 x 4 mug rug or a Try-It Sampler, both of which allow students to practice techniques while producing a small finished piece to take home. All class materials are included, and a Take-Home Beginner/Starter Kit will be available for purchase for those who wish to continue practicing at home.
The class takes place on the first floor of the Landis Valley Museum Store, making it easily accessible. The workshop runs from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, hands-on clothing.
The Woolwrights Rug Hooking Guild was certified in 2006 as Chapter 110 of ATHA, the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists. The Guild’s mission is to promote rug hooking education, preserve traditional techniques, and foster skill development among its members.
Guild members regularly share ideas, techniques, and resources, sponsor workshops, and participate in regional fiber arts exhibitions. The Woolwrights meet from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the second Friday of each month at Saint Edward’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Newcomers are always welcome to attend meetings, ask questions, and see the wide range of experience represented—from long-time practitioners to beginners just discovering the craft.
