The Traditional Rug Hooking Beginner Workshop is a hands-on, introductory class designed for beginners or for those who want a fresh start with traditional rug hooking. Taught by experienced members of the Woolwrights Rug Hooking Guild, this workshop introduces participants to the essential tools, materials, and techniques of this historic fiber art.

Traditional rug hooking has deep roots in American folk art and domestic craft traditions. In this beginner-friendly workshop, participants explore how rugs were historically made using simple tools, recycled textiles, and practical creativity. The class emphasizes both technical skills and creative exploration, making it ideal for first-time hookers as well as those who have tried rug hooking before and would like a guided refresher.

Throughout the session, instructors guide students through the fundamentals of rug hooking using a variety of equipment and supplies provided during the class. Participants will learn how rug hooking works, how loops are formed, and how design emerges through careful placement of fibers. Instructors discuss the pros and cons of different backing materials, helping students understand what works best for various projects and skill levels.

A key component of the Traditional Rug Hooking Beginner Workshop is learning how to choose the right tools. Students explore different types of hooks and learn how to select one that fits comfortably in their hand. The class also covers essential equipment such as rug hooking frames and wool cutters, offering practical advice on finding tools that suit individual needs and budgets.

Participants will also enjoy exploring the Wide World of Fibers, including traditional wool strips, yarns, and decorative embellishments. This creative portion of the workshop encourages experimentation and helps students see how texture, color, and material choices influence finished designs. By working with multiple fiber options, students gain confidence and inspiration for future projects.

During the workshop, students may choose between completing a 4 x 4 mug rug or a Try-It Sampler, allowing them to practice techniques in a manageable format. Both options provide hands-on experience while producing a small finished piece to take home. All materials needed for the class are included, and a Take-Home Beginner/Starter Kit will be available for purchase for those who wish to continue rug hooking after the workshop.

The class is held on the first floor of the Landis Valley Museum Store, making it easily accessible. The workshop runs from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for hands-on craft work.

Meet the Woolwrights Rug Hooking Guild

The Woolwrights Rug Hooking Guild was certified in 2006 as Chapter 110 of ATHA, the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists. The Guild’s mission is to promote rug hooking education, preserve traditional techniques, and support skill development among its members.

Guild members share ideas, techniques, and resources with one another and with other guilds, sponsor workshops, and participate in regional fiber arts exhibitions. The Woolwrights meet from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the second Friday of each month at Saint Edward’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Newcomers are welcome to attend meetings, ask questions, and see the wide range of skill levels represented—from long-time master hookers to those just beginning their journey.
