The Needle Felting Penguin Workshop is a fun, beginner-friendly introduction to the popular fiber art of needle felting. In this hands-on class, participants will learn how to transform loose wool fibers into a charming three-dimensional penguin using specialized felting needles and foam work surfaces. No previous experience is required—this workshop is designed to be approachable, creative, and enjoyable for first-time felters.

Led by local fiber artist Lisa Haldeman, this two-hour workshop introduces the foundational techniques of needle felting in a relaxed and supportive environment. Participants learn how felting needles work, how wool fibers interlock, and how repeated needle strokes shape and firm the wool into solid forms. Lisa guides students step by step, demonstrating techniques for building shapes, adding details, and refining surfaces to bring their penguin character to life.

All materials are included in the workshop fee. Students are provided with wool roving, felting needles, foam pads, and reference materials needed to complete their project. By the end of the class, each participant will have a finished needle-felted penguin to take home—perfect as a seasonal decoration, gift, or introduction piece for future felting projects.

Because needle felting uses sharp needles, this class is recommended for students ages 16 and older. Safety and proper technique are emphasized throughout the workshop to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable learning experience. Participants will also learn best practices for needle care, hand positioning, and workspace setup so they can continue felting safely at home.

The Needle Felting Penguin Workshop is held in the Museum Store’s second-floor classroom at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum. The historic setting provides a welcoming atmosphere that encourages creativity while connecting modern craft practice to traditional handwork and fiber arts. This workshop is ideal for adults looking to try a new hobby, fiber enthusiasts seeking a creative outlet, or anyone interested in exploring hands-on craft traditions in a museum setting.
