The Introduction to Spinning on a Wheel Workshop is a two-day, hands-on course designed for students ready to move beyond drop spindle spinning and learn to spin yarn on a traditional spinning wheel. Led by Landis Valley textile demonstrator Tina Mickley, this workshop provides a thorough introduction to spinning wheel mechanics, fiber handling, and wheel-based spinning techniques in a supportive learning environment.
Spinning wheels played a central role in historic Pennsylvania German households, transforming prepared fiber into usable yarn for weaving, knitting, and other textile production. In this workshop, participants explore both the history and practical use of spinning wheels while gaining hands-on experience with a variety of wheel styles.
Instruction begins with an overview of spinning wheel types, including differences in design, drive systems, and functionality. Participants learn how wheels are constructed, how they operate, and how different wheels influence the spinning process. Tina also covers basic wheel care and maintenance, helping students understand how to keep wheels in good working order and identify common issues.
Participants will spin wheels from Tina Mickley’s personal collection, offering exposure to a variety of wheel styles. Students are also welcome to bring their own spinning wheel, making this workshop particularly valuable for new wheel owners seeking guidance on setting up and using their equipment correctly.
Hands-on instruction focuses on transitioning from spindle spinning to wheel spinning. Participants practice drafting fiber, coordinating treadling with hand movements, controlling twist, and producing consistent yarn. Tina provides individualized guidance, allowing students to progress at their own pace while building confidence and coordination.
All materials are included in the workshop fee, including practice fiber. By the end of the workshop, participants will have spun yarn on a wheel and gained the skills needed to continue practicing independently. This class emphasizes understanding technique rather than speed, ensuring students develop good habits that support long-term success in spinning.
The Introduction to Spinning on a Wheel Workshop requires prior spinning experience. Participants must have completed the Beginning Spinning Workshop, the Fleece to Fabric Workshop, or have prior experience spinning with a drop spindle. This prerequisite ensures that students arrive with an understanding of fiber preparation, drafting, and twist—skills essential for successful wheel spinning.
The workshop takes place over two full days, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day. Participants should plan for a focused, immersive experience and are encouraged to bring lunch, drinks, and snacks. The class location and check-in point is the Museum Store.
