The False Grain Painting Workshop is a hands-on introduction to the traditional decorative art of false graining, a technique used by Pennsylvania German artisans to imitate the appearance of fine wood using paint. This historic method allowed craftspeople to create the look of expensive wood grains on more affordable materials, combining practicality with artistic expression.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to create a false-grain painted frame using acrylic paints and glazing techniques inspired by traditional Pennsylvania German color palettes. False graining, sometimes referred to as faux wood painting, relies on layering paint and manipulating glaze to simulate the natural patterns found in wood. This process requires both observation and creativity, making it an engaging and rewarding craft for beginners and experienced artists alike.

Students will explore how to mix and apply glaze and use a variety of tools to achieve realistic wood-grain effects. Techniques may include dragging, combing, and texturing the glaze to mimic different wood grain patterns. The workshop emphasizes understanding how light, color, and movement work together to create convincing grain effects.

No prior painting experience is required. The False Grain Painting Workshop is designed to be accessible to beginners while still offering valuable techniques for those with artistic experience. Participants will receive step-by-step instructions and individualized guidance as they design and complete their painted frame.

All materials are included in the workshop fee, including paints, glazing mediums, tools, and the frame surface. Students will leave with a completed piece that reflects both traditional Pennsylvania German decorative arts and their own creative interpretation.

False graining was widely used in early American homes and furniture, particularly in regions like Lancaster County, where Pennsylvania German artisans developed distinctive decorative styles. By learning this technique, participants gain insight into historic craftsmanship while developing skills applicable to modern decorative projects, furniture restoration, or artistic work.

The workshop takes place in the Museum Store classroom at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, providing an inspiring setting connected to the region’s rich decorative arts traditions. The class runs from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, making it a perfect afternoon workshop for those looking to explore a new craft without committing to a full-day session.

Participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing suitable for painting.
