This basket is incredibly unique.ย Made by many native tribes, but for some reason the Choctaw get the credit , as well aย early colonial Americans, it is a useful basketย to carry things in.ย The unusual aspect of this pouch is that you weave it and then punch it to make the shape.ย In today’s world it looks fantastic on a wall or a front door.. Size is 10 inches high x 12 inches wide, not counting the handle which can be made varying lengths

Students need to bring…measuring tape, sharpened pencil, a brick wrapped in plastic wrap, 12 large wooden clip style clothespins, old towel, scissors, pocket knife, a small regular screw driver, spray bottle, pail or dish pan to hold 2 gallons of water, lunch, drinks and snacks…wear comfortable clothes. Museum Store Second Floor. Sunday November 16, 2025 9 AM – 3 PM. All sales are final. Proceeds benefit the Museum.

Joan Betzold, a basket weaver and weaving teacher for over 30 years, attends 40+ art, folk art, colonial, fiber and gardening shows a year.ย She has been honored as the Featured Artist at several nationally recognized shows.ย Joan designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves her original baskets using centuries old techniques without nails, glue, staples or molds.ย She is well-known for her award winning custom designs as well as unusual baskets incorporating vintage tools, kitchen items, antlers, or a treasured piece from a loved one. She teaches weaving at many local museums as well as privately. For several years she has been asked to serve as the basket weaving judge at the Maryland State Fair.
