Profiles of Individuals from Three Historic African-American Families in the Pennsylvania-German Region." The exhibit features John Worfel, a private in Company C, 32nd Regiment of the United States Colored Troops (USCT,) and personal belongings including his musket, cartridge box, bayonet and scabbard as well as other items. Three blacksmiths, John, Benjamin and Edward Sebastian worked in rural Berks County during the mid 1800s. On display are a number of objects which they crafted such as utensils and tools. William Chester Ruth, known to family and friends as “Chester,” was best known as an inventor who operated in Gap, PA. As a child in the late 1800s, he liked to experiment and take things apart to see how they worked; as an adult in the early 1900s, he designed, patented and manufactured a bale feeder, a self-raising conveyor-elevator and more. His patent models and other personal effects are on exhibit in the Visitor Center. Exhibit runs through December 31, 2010.
